PostgreSQL is a powerful, open-source object-relational database system with over 35 years of active development. It is known for reliability, data integrity, and correctness. PostgreSQL supports advanced features including complex queries, foreign keys, triggers, updatable views, materialized views, transactional integrity, multiversion concurrency control (MVCC), JSON/JSONB data types, full-text search, geographic data (PostGIS), and custom extensions. It handles workloads ranging from single-machine applications to large-scale data warehouses with many concurrent users. PostgreSQL is the database of choice for many modern applications and is the default for platforms like Supabase, Heroku, and Railway.
