What is the SaaS quick ratio?
The SaaS quick ratio is a growth-efficiency metric for subscription businesses. It compares all recurring revenue gained during a period with all recurring revenue lost during the same period.
That distinction matters because two companies can report the same net-new MRR while having completely different businesses underneath. One may retain customers and expand accounts. The other may spend heavily on acquisition just to replace revenue leaking through churn.
Do not confuse it with the accounting quick ratio, also called the acid-test ratio. That liquidity metric compares liquid assets with current liabilities. The SaaS quick ratio measures recurring-revenue movement instead.

New MRR
Recurring revenue from customers who began paying during the period. Exclude one-time setup fees, services revenue, taxes, and usage charges that are not contractually recurring.
Expansion MRR
Additional recurring revenue from existing customers. Upgrades, extra seats, add-ons, and higher recurring usage can count when they increase normalized MRR.
Churned MRR
Recurring revenue lost when a customer cancels completely. Use the customer's normalized MRR immediately before cancellation, not the total value of the remaining contract.
Contraction MRR
Recurring revenue lost when an active customer downgrades, removes seats, receives a lasting discount, or reduces recurring usage. Keep contraction separate from full churn so you can diagnose the leak later.
Three SaaS quick ratio examples
Example 1: healthy 4.0 ratio
A company adds $24,000 in new MRR and $8,000 in expansion MRR. It loses $5,000 to churn and $3,000 to contraction. Its quick ratio is ($24,000 + $8,000) / ($5,000 + $3,000) = 4.0. It added four dollars for each dollar lost.
Example 2: flat 1.0 ratio
Another company gains $15,000 in new MRR and $5,000 from expansion but loses $12,000 to churn and $8,000 to contraction. The ratio is $20,000 / $20,000 = 1.0. Sales activity is replacing losses, not producing net recurring growth.
Example 3: shrinking 0.75 ratio
A third company gains $9,000 in new MRR and $3,000 in expansion while losing $10,000 to churn and $6,000 to contraction. The ratio is $12,000 / $16,000 = 0.75. For every dollar lost, only 75 cents came back; MRR shrank by $4,000.
What is a good SaaS quick ratio in 2026?
Stripe's January 2026 guide describes a ratio above 4.0 as generally healthy, 1.0 as a standstill, and below 1.0 as shrinking recurring revenue. It also notes that a mature company near 3.0 can still have healthy growth.
Use those bands as signals, not commandments. A seed-stage company can post a huge ratio because its loss base is tiny. A larger company may add substantial net MRR with a lower ratio because the denominator grows with its installed customer base.
A high ratio can also hide expensive growth. If aggressive paid acquisition drives almost all new MRR while expansion is weak, the headline looks good but unit economics may not. How to calculate it from your database
1. Pick one consistent period
Monthly calculation is the clearest default because all four inputs are MRR movements. Use calendar months and one timezone. If your revenue is lumpy, also show a trailing three-month ratio so one enterprise contract does not dominate the chart.
2. Build an account-level MRR movement table
For each customer and month, store opening MRR, closing MRR, plan, acquisition channel, billing currency, and movement type. Normalize annual contracts to monthly values. Convert currencies consistently, and keep foreign-exchange changes out of expansion and contraction.

3. Classify every movement once
Opening MRR of zero and positive closing MRR usually means new business. A positive increase for an active account is expansion. Closing MRR of zero is churn. A negative change that leaves positive MRR is contraction.
Decide how to treat reactivations before calculation. Either add reactivation MRR to the numerator as a separate gain or exclude it from the standard ratio and report it beside the metric. Consistency across periods matters more than the choice.
4. Aggregate gains and losses
Sum new and expansion MRR for the numerator. Sum the absolute values of churned and contraction MRR for the denominator. Do not net positive and negative movements before division; that destroys the information the ratio is meant to expose.
If churn plus contraction equals zero, the ratio is mathematically undefined, not zero. Show “no losses” and report the gained MRR instead of inventing an infinite dashboard value.
5. Segment the result
Calculate the company-wide ratio, then split it by plan, customer size, acquisition channel, geography, and tenure cohort. A blended score of 3.5 may hide an enterprise segment at 6.0 and an SMB segment below 1.0. The segment tells you where to act.

For contraction, inspect downgraded plans, removed seats, and reduced usage. The remedy may be product adoption, packaging, customer-success intervention, or removing a price cliff—not another acquisition campaign.
